SELF LOADING WAGONS "WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY"

Pöttinger means quality and reliability worldwide. The "What the Experts Say" section takes you on a tour to farming operations all over the world. Farmers report on their experience with Pöttinger agricultural technology.
Zdeněk Frejlach, based near Tábor (CZ)

Every year the Czech privately-owned farms association organises the "Best Farm" competition. The assessment of each farm is based on more than just economic factors – they also assess the appearance of the farm, how the family works together and any developments that are planned. In 2006, the fifth time the competition was held, it was won by a family-run farm in Borkovice near Tábor. The farm belongs to the brothers Zdeněk and Václav Frejlach, with other members of the family helping out as needed.

At the moment they farm 300 ha, 220 ha of which is arable, 72 pasture and meadow and the remaining 8 ha forest. They grow primarily wheat, rapeseed, triticale, malting barley and forage crops. They breed 90 cattle, of which 48 are dairy with an annual yield of around 8000 kg of milk. "We have been lucky because we've always bred cattle, which puts money in the bank every month. That is how we were able to purchase machines and increase the size of our business" says Zdeněk Frejlach. "The first Pöttinger machine we bought was the BOSS 2 loader wagon, which we bought from Agrozet České Budějovice in 2002. We soon realised that this manufacturer produces powerful, reliable machinery and decided to continue buying their products. Today we own ten Pöttinger machines, practically a complete chain for forage, tillage and seed (SERVO 35 plough, TERRADISC 3000 compact harrow, LION 301 power harrow, VITASEM 301 A mechanical seed drill, TWIST 7001 F4 muck spreader, ROLLPROFI 3300 LSC round baler, ...). All we are missing is the tedder, which we intend to purchase next season. The most recent machine we bought was the muck spreader. We are very satisfied with all of the machines; working with Pöttinger agricultural technology is really something special because you get maximum performance and reliability."

Michael Silson (Kaponga, Taranaki, New Zealand)

GREATER productivity gains and exceptional build quality are the biggest benefits Michael Silson sees in his new Pöttinger Torro 5100 loader wagons. As owner of Riverlea Contracting in Kaponga, Taranaki, Michael’s business covers a radius of 100km and cartage can account for significant amount of time and money for him and his clients. Moving up to the Pöttinger loader wagons last season has meant Michael has been able to increase his capacity and productivity by almost 33 %.

With our old wagons we were doing around 1.4 hectares an hour, with the Pöttingers we would be knocking out up to 2 hectares an hour, that is how much better they are in the paddock, and how much better their cubic capacity is.” A larger capacity has reduced the travelling between loading and unloading while billing clients has been simplified thanks to the Pöttingers’ in-cab monitor.

“It is capable of telling us the number of loads we have done per day, and the time taken to pick up loads, and we can allow for longer or shortage cartage times in our charges without having to constantly watch the hour clock,” says Michael.

Down time has been minimised with the user-friendly servicing features on the Torro wagons. This includes an easily accessed knife bank. “The bank swings to the side, making it easy to get it for the daily sharpen.” A simple spring loaded system means the blades themselves are also easy to put on and off. The blades themselves provide an excellent, precise cut that Michael says is the best he has seen on any wagon. The pendulum suspension pickup is a unique feature he believes adds to the machine’s ability to collect grass very effectively.

Despite the Torro wagons’ size, Michael says he is impressed with the stability they have on steeper terrain. “They are also very good on softer ground. We used them over winter to collect grass from the Kapuni farm site, where it is simply too wet to use the self-propelled machine, and they performed very well! Manoeuvrability through narrow gates is exceptional, aided by a steering axle.
“It is quite amazing what gate ways you can get them through! he says. Opting for the bigger wagons has meant tractor size has been lifted, from a New Holland TM 165 to a TM 175, providing plenty of torque for keeping the momentum going with the larger wagons on behind.

Breakdowns have been non-existent, and Michael says he has found the importer, Four Seasons agriculture excellent to work with. “This is the first time we have ever opted for Pöttinger, but I can see in the future as we need to up grade our mowers and other machinery we would definitely be looking at them for that gear too.”
