Technical highlights

Quick-Fix rapid tine changer

The tines are the critical interface to the seedbed. The penetration of the soil needs to be optimised so that crumbling is completely uniform.

LION power harrow tines are swept inwards and slanted to the rear. The soil is loosened intensively and crumbled near the surface. Larger clods and harvest residues can flow through lower down.

Material: 0,7’ / 18 mm (0,5’ / 12 mm 100 series) thick dual tines made from hardened boron steel.The tines are hardened across the full thickness of the material. Hardened right through!

Quick fix – rapid tine changer
It's this easy:

1. Remove two linch pins and lock pins.
2. Remove the two tine pieces.
3. Insert the new tines between the tine carrier and clamping plate.
4. Secure in place using the bolts and linch pins. That’s all
there is to it!
The lock pins and linch pins are protected against dirt and
working loose by a cover.

MULCH DRILLING TINE

This tine can be implemented aggressively pointing forwards, or can be trailed.

Angled forwards, the tines break up the soil from underneath and harvest trash is spread only on the surface of the soil. The finer earth is located at the depth of the seed, whereas larger clods remain on the surface to protect against erosion.

The tine is 0,7’ / 18 mm thick and features blades on both sides. The Quick fix system enables you to change quickly and easily to the trailed position.

Transmission and bearings

Heavy duty transmission

Central gear unit with spiral toothing and tapered roller bearings.
Central p.t.o. shaft inlet, interchangeable gears for adjusting speed, p.t.o. through shaft.

1 Thick-walled fine grain steel box-section for extra torsion.

2 The gear trough is slanted downwards: Earth can escape unhindered, no build up, no scraping
against the gear pan.

3 Massive tapered roller bearings in oversized, forged, single-piece bearing housings. Ideal bearing spacing on the rotor shaft; the tapered roller bearings easily handle radial and axial stress for a long service life.

Both the bearings and the sturdy, heat-treated gear wheels are submerged in grease.

The lower bearing is located close to the tine carrier so there is less stress on the bearing, lower wear.

Both bearings are located below the gear wheels so there is no risk of gear damage due to disintegrating bearing parts. Bearings are tightly sealed with labyrinth seals and shaft seals.

Tines are slanted inwards and swept backwards so they tend to force surface trash downwards, rather than to the side.

6 The forged tine carriers are integrated into the casing so that they are protected and there is no risk of stone impact.
Surface trash cannot wrap around the rotor shafts.

LION

Precision in detail
The bearing housings are welded into the box section before being milled at the machining centre. This method ensures that the spacing between the rotor axes is absolutely constant: guarantee for extremely smooth running and a long service life.

Easy to service
Reliable power transmission from the central gear unit through a heavy duty forged coupling flange direct to the bevel gear, not through shaft, so it is easier to service.

The scrapers are located low down. That is why in wet conditions slabs of earth cannot be lifted up - the best possible capillary conditions are achieved for germination of the seed.

The scrapers can be adjusted individually, or as a group from a central point. They can be pivoted away to make cleaning easier.

Hydraulic load alleviation for power harrow

	2 hydraulic cylinders with accumulators take the weight of the power harrow and seed drill. The pressure is applied to the trailed roller. The power harrow can then easily be lifted over obstructions. The hydraulic pressure can be adjusted using the tractor's hydraulics and pressure gauge.

New interchangeable gear-box features cooling fins for best possible heat dissipation, plus a massive forged coupling flange.

The LION 251 and 301 with working widths of 2.50 and 3 m are the right power harrows for arable land farmers requiring high quality, smooth running and a long service life.

Robust headstock

Category II or III linkages the length of the headstock couplings can be adjusted to fit various tractor lower links. The integrated suspension system ensures the best possible ground tracking.

Levelling plate

Levelling plate can be used for front and rear. The triangle-cross section of the levelling plate feeds the earth smoothly to the tines and roller without causing the earth to pile up.
Height adjustable using hole matrix. The suspension provides a certain freedom of movement for ground hugging while allowing foreign objects through: best protection against overloading.

Best ground hugging

The working depth is easy to adjust using a pin in hole matrix. The power harrow can ride upwards over bumps independently of the roller which remains on the ground. This protects both the tines and the implement.

LION 302.12 power harrows
The new 12-rotor model

The LION 302.12 with 12 rotors and a working width of 3 metres is completely new to the Pöttinger range. 20 percent more tines over the same working width as the 10-rotor harrows results in an even more perfect result with the finest crumbling effect. Especially for potato and vegetable growers, this new model delivers the best possible results, even on heavy clay soils. An additional advantage: a fine soil structure is achieved even though the rotors run at 15 percent lower speed than on models with fewer rotors - so lower power requirement is a positive bonus. Thanks to interchangeable gears, the rotor speed can be adjusted to suit any soil conditions and PTO shaft rpm. This new LION model with working width of 3 metres is suitable for tractors up to 180 hp.

Strength and durability guaranteed
The new LION 302.12 also features proven integrated tine mountings to prevent wrapping of potato foliage or other long harvest residues. The individual tines are easy to handle. The tine thickness of 15 mm ensures a long service life. In addition the LION has heavy-duty tapered roller bearings for the best strength, durability and smooth operation. The high-strength deep gear trough with integrated reinforcement web provides the gearbox with excellent strength. The labyrinth seals protect the gears against dust, moisture, soil and contribute to extending the service life of the machine.

The headstock has wide supports and ensures optimum load distribution. Double-sided Cat. II/III mounting linkage lugs with integrated oscillation and three-position adjustment are designed to match future tractor classes and enable optimum equalization of uneven ground between the tractor and implement. Side deflectors (optionally spring-mounted with a parallel action) ensure a level and tidy finish. These are simply raised during transport to maintain the 3.0 metre transport width. They are released by removing a pin; no need to adjust the spring. The position of the side deflectors is easily adjusted using the slotted holes.

The same versatile range of rear rollers (cutting packer, crumbling packer and toothed packer rollers) are available as for the proven LION 10-rotor 1002 series power harrows. There is no need to adjust the levelling board when changing working depth or to compensate for tine wear, since this is adjusted automatically by the rear roller. The result is greater comfort, easier handling and fewer adjustments. This new model can also be used in combination with a VITASEM seed drill.

The LION power harrow
for the right seedbed preparation in spring

The farm manager is the ultimate authority in making decisions on what a seedbed is going to look like. It's important that water is treated carefully as a resource so that it is available for the germination stage.

What needs to be done next?
The seed level is prepared depending on the type of crop. This is where the seed is placed to obtain the necessary moisture so that it germinates as quickly and smoothly as possible. With maize the deeply-loosened soil can be raised to around 2 cm within the seed placement depth so that the maize roots can develop easily following germination. The root then rapidly reaches the water-bearing level.
The soil surface structure should be left so that it does not hinder plant growth. A crusty or muddy surface after heavy rain can be detrimental.

Unlike other seedbed preparation methods, LION rotary harrows can often have an influence on the final appearance of the seedbed. First the working depth is adjusted. Then the correct driving speed and the position of the levelling plate. This provides additional pulverisation of earth clods as it is dragged across the surface of the soil close to the active tine area. However, it is also possible to overdo this be pulverising the whole seedbed. This would then cause a muddy surface during rain. In addition to the working depth and driving speed, another important factor for seedbed preparation with LION power harrows is the range of speeds of rotation of the tines: this can be adjusted by changing the PTO speed of the tractor or by changing gear wheels directly on the harrow.
On the other hand, the method of re-compaction depends very much on the type of soil and the moisture content of the ground. The important factor is that the seed is provided with the optimum conditions for uniform and stress-free germination. Too fine a structure on the surface can cause mud and crust, which prevent the exchange of gases. A rough, clod-strewn surface, however, makes it difficult to achieve the desired level of cover for the seed.

With Pöttinger power rotary harrows a wide selection of trailed rollers is available, ranging from standard cage drum rollers to packer rollers and rollers with strip-wise compaction; cutting packer rollers and crumbling packer rollers.

Until now, LION power harrows have always shared a brochure with our seed drills. Now we have created a separate brochure for these multipurpose soil preparation machines. The numerous different models with working widths of between 2.50 and 6.0 metres now fill 24 pages. Features are described in detail for each of the models: professional equipment, rear rollers and the unique quick-change tine system. Available from mid July.
